Danville KY gets saucy with BBQ festival

The City of Firsts became the site of another premiere with the first-ever Kentucky State BBQ Festival Nov. 5-6 at Constitution Square State Historic Site.

A number of nationally-known pitmasters attended the free festival and cooked for the masses: Moe Cason of Ponderosa BBQ; Shelly Fritsch-Hunt of Desperados Barbecue and Catering; Craig Kimmel of FireHouse BBQ; Brad Simmons of Lucky Dog BBQ, and the organizer of the Kentucky State BBQ Festival; Ray “Dr. BBQ” Lampe; Carey Bringle of Peg Leg Porker; and Melissa Cookston of Yazoo’s Delta Q.

The weekend included barbecue sampling, preparation and cooking demonstrations with the pitmasters, and grilling and smoking experts with Big Green Egg, the world’s largest manufacturer of kamado-style cookers. A beer garden was on site.

Organizers estimated 15,000 people were on the grounds during the height of the Saturday rush and that the festival drew more than 25,000 people overall.
“It was bigger and better than we could have hoped for,” festival founder Simmons said at the time. “It really was beyond our wildest dreams.”
